ARTIST STATEMENT

Otherness has been at the center of my concerns and interests since I reached adulthood. Be it in my doctoral dissertation, my first career as an educator or in my current artistic endeavors, identity has always been an overarching theme, often correlated with the issues of injustice  and stereotypes.

Through my work, I wish to explore people's inward significance below appearances and societal constructs, disclosing the necessary process of self-reflection which, through trials and errors, leads us to the ultimate liberation of the mind  from all oppressive diktats.

Thus, I want to dispose of all the oppositions that tear cultures, genders and races apart in order to reveal the universal notions of beauty, strength, resilience and faith that exist in billions of variants in each one of us.

My work is therefore a constant pendulum swing between diversity and unity, the inner self and the illusion of appearances, life and death, past and present, the painting's subject and the viewer, our artistic heritage and current topics

That dichotomy not only resides in the themes I explore, it also permeates my technical endeavor. Indeed, my work is at the junction of different influences: that of classical portraiture with its quest for harmony, precision and balance and more contemporary experimentations with bold colors, maximalist patterns, shapes  and textures.
